New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel didn't have to wait long to address the elephant in the room, when he stepped to the podium for his first press conference ahead of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.
On Tuesday, it was reported that wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing criminal charges, including assault, stemming from an alleged incident that occurred on December 2. Then a new report surfaced on Wednesday that defensive tackle Christian Barmore was facing a misdemeanor domestic assault charge from an alleged incident that took place on August 8.
Vrabel was asked if there was disappointment regarding the charges on the two star players.
"I would say not disappointing at all," Vrabel responded. "I think these are allegations, like you mentioned in the question, things that we have to handle and every day that there's distractions. Some are smaller than others. I'm confident that we'll focus on the Dolphins and those two individuals that you mentioned will be able to handle the ongoing legal process."
Barmore is set to be arraigned on February 3, while Diggs' arraignment will be held on January 23.
One has to wonder if the NFL will consider stepping in to put either player on the Commissioner's Exempt List while the legal process plays out. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport acknowledged more information needs to come out, but he didn't rule out the possibility of Diggs at least going on the list.
"We do not know the status of Stefon Diggs right now," Rapoport said. "There are obviously other things we need to know about the charges, the specifics, a lot more information needs to come out. But certainly, Diggs being placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List is at least possible."
