A bloodied Mike Vrabel was the tone-setter in the offseason after his cheek got busted during a joint practice scrimmage. The New England Patriots hope that remains the case in the postseason after the head coach was bloodied on the sidelines while celebrating with defensive tackle Milton Williams.
On Sunday, the Patriots' defense nearly pitched a shutout against the Los Angeles Chargers by holding quarterback Justin Herbert and company to only three points. And Williams, the man Vrabel made the highest-paid player in Patriots' franchise history, was the closer by burying Herbert on a sack late in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
After the play, Williams ran over to Vrabel to celebrate, and his helmet accidentally made contact with his head coach's lip. As expected, Vrabel shrugged it off and continued to celebrate on the sidelines with his team.
A little blood wasn't going to spoil the party after the Patriots earned their first playoff victory in the last seven years.
It has been a wild ride for a Patriots team that finished with only four wins last season.
In only their first year under Vrabel, they locked up the AFC East division, finished with a 14-3 record and won a playoff game for the first time since Tom Brady was under center at quarterback.
That blood serves as symbolism that this Patriots team is built differently.
