Mike Kafka is the latest Detroit Lions offensive coordinator candidate expected to interview for the vacancy this week, with reports from ESPN and NFL Network saying he'll interview Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Kafka was the New York Giants' offensive coordinator in 2025, and took over as interim coach in Week 11 after coach Brian Daboll was fired. The Giants went 2-5 under Kafka, who called the plays, including an overtime loss at the Lions where third-string quarterback Jameis Winston led the Giants to 27 points.
Kafka, who has served as Giants OC the past four seasons, also interviewed for the Giants' full-time coach opening, and reportedly was set to interview Tuesday for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC job.

Kafka, who played quarterback at Northwestern and is from Chicago, was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2010 NFL Draft, and appeared in four games as a backup in 2011. He spent time with New England, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Tennessee and Cincinnati, last on an NFL roster in 2015, according to Pro Football Reference.
Mike McDaniel, former Miami Dolphins coach, was expected to interview Tuesday for the Lions' OC job.
The Lions fired OC John Morton last week, after he had been stripped of play-calling duties in early November, with coach Dan Campbell calling the plays for the final nine games. The Lions went 4-5 in those games to finish 9-8 and out of the NFL playoffs after making the playoffs the previous two seasons, including a franchise-best 15-2 in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins have requested permission to interview Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard for their vacant head coach position.
