CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers are set to begin a new era with Mike Gansey taking over as the team's President of Basketball Operations. He joins the Sixers after 14 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he served as GM of the G League's Cleveland Charge and eventually worked his way up to being GM of the Cavaliers in 2022.
Gansey, a native of Olmsted Falls, OH, will be joining a Sixers team that is coming off a solid season. They finished 45-37, and pulled off a stunning 3-1 comeback to eliminate the Boston Celtics in Round 1 of the playoffs, but they were then swept out of Round 2 by the New York Knicks. So, while, yes, there is talent here, but there is also work for Gansey and the front office to do before Philadelphia can become title contenders.
"They got swept in the second round," Gansey said succinctly. "So, it's not a championship caliber team right now, but we're going to work on that. Obviously, getting the big four together on the floor, but we're going to do everything we can to bring players in here that fit and that obviously can help. We got a great staff here, and we're gonna do everything we can to get the best players in here to help us get to the mountaintop."
Gansey is joining a front office in Philadelphia where he will be flanked by HBSE native Bob Myers as well as Chester, PA native and former All-Star Jameer Nelson as they look to help the Sixers get to the top for the first time since 1983. Gansey was a part of Cleveland's title team in 2016, Myers won four championships with the Golden State Warriors, and Nelson has been to the finals as a player with the Orlando Magic in 2009.
"Obviously, I loved Cleveland," Gansey stated. "It would have taken a lot to get me out of Cleveland, but having conversations with Bob, Josh (Harris), you got a championship-level coach in Nick (Nurse), you got a lot of really good players on the roster, and Josh's passion. He wants to win at the highest level, and that's what I want to do. He hates to lose. I hate to lose. The more conversations we had, I was really excited about this, and very fortunate that I'm here."
It's that passion that Gansey has for winning, a total detestation for losing, that has everybody excited in Philadelphia. The Sixers have work to do, for sure, but there is hope that they are closer than some may think.
"I'm just ready to work with these guys, because Bob's won four championships, Nick's won a championship, I've won a championship in Cleveland," Gansey finished. "So, we want to do the same thing here in Philadelphia."
