Mike Florio Breaks Down Why Patriots Are Only Serious Fit For A.J. Brown originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Patriots are potentially set to bring in a new star player in the first week of June, and that player could be wide receiver A.J. Brown.
For several months, there has been growing speculation that the Eagles might trade Brown to the Patriots after June 1st. Making this move would lower Brown's dead cap hit from $43 million to just $16 million for this season. While some Patriots fans may be anxious about the possibility of Brown ending up with another team, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio believes that is unlikely to happen.
"If there was another team pursuing Brown, we’d know about it," Florio wrote on Thursday. "The Eagles would have leaked it. The goal would be to pit two teams against each other in the hopes of getting the best possible return.
"As it stands, it’s the Patriots or no one. And with all indications pointing to the Eagles and Brown being beyond the point of no return, Philly’s only play is to make a deal."
There’s still a chance that the Eagles might hold onto Brown if they’re not satisfied with the deal proposed by the Patriots. However, that would be tough for Philadelphia, especially since it brought in several wide receivers this offseason, including Hollywood Brown, Makai Lemon and Dontavian Wicks.
It would be surprising not to see Brown play for the Patriots this season, and fans shouldn't be concerned if the two teams don’t explore any trades in the first few days of June, as they might be working something out behind the scenes.
