The Boston Celtics have made their signing of veteran point guard Mike Conley official via a release circulated by the team to the media on Tuesday (July 7) morning. As is the case with their other press releases about contract issues, the exact details were not made available to the public, but it was reported elsewhere that the former Minnesota Timberwolves floor general will be earning a vet minimum contract for just the 2026-27 NBA season.
According to the release, Conley will become just the 14th player in the history of the NBA to hit the 20-season milestone by playing with Boston this upcoming campaign. They also note that the former Minnesota guard has appeared in a total of 1,226 games – 1,143 starts – across 19 seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies (2007-19), the Utah Jazz (2019-23), and Timberwolves (2023-26) over which he put up 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 30.7 minutes per game. "A career 43.6 percent field goal shooter, including 38.7 percent from 3 and 82.6 percent from the free-throw line, Conley Jr. has seen action in 108 NBA Playoff games (all starts), averaging 13.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in 33.5 minutes per contest," they add.
The 2021 NBA All-Star is, per the release, one of only four active players and just nine in NBA history to log at least 16,000 points, 6,500 assists, 3,500 rebounds, and 1,600 steals, with James Harden, LeBron James, and Russell Westbrook being the others who have done so.
"Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Conley Jr. was originally drafted by the Grizzlies with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft after one collegiate season at Ohio State University," they share in the release. "The 38-year-old is a four-time NBA Sportsmanship Award winner ... and a two-time Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year (winner ...).
"Conley Jr. is one of two players in NBA history to win the award on multiple occasions," they also share, with Boston alum Jrue Holiday the other.
