No surprise here. He sold his house. He said he would retire rather than play in Cincy this year. And Brown said he wouldn't trade him. Guess everyone stuck to their guns.

The Browns retain his rights; the only way he can come out of retirement is if he plays for the Bengals.

Can he come out of retirement the following season?
I believe so and I also believe that that is the plan.
Billy Bob and CC already addressed it but here's the low down high jinx on this one horse caper. When they sign a contract, for example a three year contract, it isn't really a contract for three calendar years. It is a contract for three years as a member of that team. If the player says "I'm not playing" after 1 year, it doesn't matter how long he is retired or sits out, when he comes back he still has two years left on his contract. If Barry Sanders decided that he wanted to play in the NFL again he would be under contract with the Detroit Lions, even though he hasn't played since 1998.

That's the stupidest most pigheaded thing I've ever heard. (I mean Brown, not you Gee)

They're not "rewarding" Palmer by trading him, they'd just be doing the smart thing and actually getting something back for him instead of him just retiring and being totally screwed. The Bengals could get a LOT out of a Plamer trade, that's just plain dumb.

Seriously, talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. The ownership is sacrificing the good of the team in order to win a pissing contest. Just trade him and get something for it.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification. Well, that sucks for Palmer then, doesn't it?

Totally agree. Way to get nothing for your team. Great management right there!

If I were a Bengals fan I'd be incensed. I might be angry with Palmer for refusing to play for my team, but in the long view I'd be more frustrated that he wasn't moved to a non-conference opponent to fill another need or get some picks.

Could be that Palmer told Brown he was retiring trade or no trade?

Normally, I'd applaud a team standing firm but in this case, I think it's stupid. Palmer has kept his mouth shut and done everything he could despite the fact they surrounded him with some class A ego driven idiots. Personally, I'd nominate him for sainthood and send him to the team of his choice just for putting up with the Bengals for several years.

In European soccer, guys put in "transfer requests" all the time and they are almost always honored. If a guy doesn't want to be there, get what you can for him and move on.

Mike Brown is cutting off his nose to spite his face.

I love it when people stick to their word. Well played both sides.
RE: Mike Brown's quote about Palmer not honoring his committment. - What about Brown's committment to field a competitive football team?

Mike Brown FTW!
How is it a win for the Bengals? They lose Palmer and get nothing in return.

Brown may have inherited his father's stubborness, but he certainly didn't inherit his genius! :thumbdown
