The No. 2-seed Michigan women’s basketball team went old school for its Sweet 16 appearance on Saturday against No. 3 Louisville and donned baseball uniform tops as they did four years ago. That was the last time the Wolverines had reached this NCAA Tournament round and advanced to the Elite 8.
Michigan, ranked ninth, shrugged off a sluggish first quarter and walloped the Cardinals, 71-52 at Dickies Arena. The victory avenges the Wolverines Elite 8 loss to Louisville in 2022. Now, for the second time in program history, the Wolverines (28-6), its win total equaling a program best set in 2016-17, will play in the Elite 8 with a shot at making the Final Four.
This was the third time Michigan has advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in program history and first since 2022. The Wolverines will face the winner of No. 1 seed Texas-Kentucky on Monday night.
Olivia Olson led Michigan with 19 points, Syla Swords had 16 and Te’Yala Delfoss, whose eight points sparked the Wolverines in the second quarter, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Brooke Quarles Daniels had nine rebounds.
Michigan took is largest lead, 66-43, at 5:11, but the Cardinals found some life in the fourth quarter and took advantage of the Wolverines’ scoring drought. Michigan was 0 of 6 from the field after making its last field goal with 4:58 left. But at the point, the Wolverines’ lead was insurmountable.
Michigan and Louisville exchanged the lead four times early in the third quarter, but the Wolverines looked unstoppable after a timeout with 4:36 left. Michigan went on a 20-2 run to take a 57-40 lead into the final quarter.
The Wolverines outrebounded the Cardinals 11-2 and shot 58.8% as Olson and Swords each scored eight points.
With Louisville leading by 11 with 7:17 left in the first half, Michigan came alive and went on a 13-0 run in the second quarter while the Cardinals went 0 of 5 from the field. The Wolverines took their first lead of the game on Delfosse’s layup off her defensive rebound.
Delfosse’s eight second-quarter points helped spark the Wolverines, who found their groove rebounding after a tough first quarter and outrebounded the Cardinals 10-7. Michigan won the quarter, 23-12 and took a 32-27 lead at halftime.
Michigan looked sluggish in the first quarter and were shut out until finally scoring with 3:46 left. The Wolverines shot 29% from the field and had issues with Louisville’s post size and were outrebounded 12-6. They trailed 12-6 at the end of the quarter.
