Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics' Sophia Umstead swims to USA national title in breaststroke

When Sophia Umstead picked Virginia, she knew she would be training with Olympic gold medalists and a group of the nation's elite that had won four NCAA titles in a row.

Balancing her training with the Cavaliers and with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics in Holland, Umstead showed her potential quickly with a ninth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at her first NCAA Championships, helping Virginia to another title.

As the college season ended and the long-course season began, Umstead continued to build her underwaters, ready for a big-stage performance.

Umstead put it all together to claim the national championship in the 200-meter breaststroke on Wednesday, July 29, in Irvine, California.

The Jenison High School graduate won the gold medal in 2:25.57, holding off the national field.

The club has produced several junior national champions, but this is the second USA national championship for MLA. Devon Nowicki won the 100 breaststroke in 2019.
