Boerne Champion's Kate Canales captured her first national title after winning tight race in the 50-meter breaststroke at USA Swimming's Juniors Nationals on Tuesday in Irvine, Calif.

Canales, who is committed to Florida, out-touched Grace Koenig-Song of Chicago for the victory with a time of 32.04 seconds. Koenig-Song timed a 32.08. On Monday, Canales was seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:10.69.

Tuesday's race concluded a busy 1 ½ weeks for Canales, the 2026 Express-News Girls Swimmer of the Year, who will be a senior at Boerne Champion.

Last week, Canales competed in several events at USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine including the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley. She qualified for finals in the Under 18 50-meter breaststroke and finished third.

Canales is the state's top-ranked girls swimmer. She was selected as girls MVP of the UIL Class 5A State Championships in February after winning four gold medals to lead Boerne Champion to back-to-back team titles. Canales broke her meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke. She also won the 100-yard butterfly. Canales has eight career state gold medals.
