In some ways, Michigan football managed to bolster its roster through the transfer portal, not just through additions, but also through retention.

In the days following the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and the hiring of Kyle Whittingham to lead the charge in Ann Arbor, there was a bevy of entries into the transfer portal, some more surprising than others. But Whittingham and his new staff worked diligently to secure some of the top players who had been looking to depart the program, bringing back Jake Guarnera, Andrew Sprague, Zeke Berry, and Jordan Young.

But the Wolverines desperately needed a defensive tackle in the portal, regardless, and with that, Whittingham managed to convince Enow Etta, who had entered the portal, to withdraw and come back to the maize and blue.

Etta was originally a four-star edge rusher out of Texas, but after his freshman year, he bulked up and converted to the defensive interior. He was the talk of spring ball in 2024, but didn't quite live up to the lofty expectations heaped upon him with all of the lavish praise. However, he was a key depth piece in the past two years, having rotated in throughout the season.

Now that Etta returns, he'll pair with Trey Pierce and Utah transfer Jonah Lea'ea, and perhaps another unsung hero in the middle of the defense, including (but not limited to) Deyvid Palepale, Travis Moten, Benny Patterson, Ted Hammond, Bobby Kanka, or even one of the incoming true freshmen, Titan Davis and Alister Vallejo.
