Michael Porter Jr. hits out at America’s ‘out-of-control’ tipping culture

Brooklyn Nets player Michael Porter Jr. has recently decided to share his opinion on the tipping culture in the United States of America.

In the US, mandatory tipping is pretty normal for a lot of things, but that isn’t the case in other parts of the world.

Take the United Kingdom, for example. People there generally do not tip anywhere near as much or as often as Americans, and the tipping culture in the US actually came as quite a surprise to some soccer fans from around the globe when they visited this summer for the 2026 World Cup.

Now, Porter has suggested that it has actually gotten out of control.

Michael Porter Jr. questions tipping culture in the USA​

In a recent interview, the Nets ace did admit that he is a bad tipper, but suggested the 20% charge has gone a bit far.

He explained: “If you spending $3,000 on a meal, you shouldn’t have to tip $600, twenty per cent.

“Uber Eats is another thing. If the Uber Eats order is $250, why are you still tipping 20% when they’re doing the same amount of work as if you ordered a $20 meal? They’re still just bringing the meal to you”

“I would say tipping culture is definitely out of control, to me. But I’m a bad tipper, I ain’t going to lie”


Porter is now in the midst of the NBA off-season, with action set to ramp back up in the coming months.

The Nets will kick off their preseason during the first week of October with a meeting against the Charlotte Hornets.

This will then be followed up by a meeting with LeBron James’ new team, the Philadelphia 76ers, on October 8.
