A pair of unbeaten Clark County softball rivals will meet on the diamond tonight in Springfield Twp.
Defending Division IV state champion Kenton Ridge (13-0) will face D-V No. 2 Shawnee (15-0) at 5 p.m. Friday, April 17, in a Central Buckeye Conference crossover division matchup at Shawnee High School.
The unbeaten Cougars have won 45 consecutive games and are currently ranked No. 16 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll and No. 12 in the MaxPreps Top 25. A year ago, KR won the first state softball championship in school and county history, beating Hillsboro 9-0 at Akron’s Firestone Stadium.
Shawnee is off to its best start since the 2014 season. They beat D-III No. 7 Western Brown 13-11 on Thursday night, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The rally was capped by a walk-off homer by Braves sophomore Byanca Dubie.
The Cougars won the big school CBC Kenton Trail for the fourth consecutive time last season, while the Braves won the small school CBC Mad River. Both teams lead their respective divisions this season.
Kenton Ridge is led by sophomore pitcher Ivee Rastatter. She leads the CBC with 13 wins and 115 strikeouts in 75 innings and ranks second in earned run average at 1.59. The Cougars have allowed a CBC-best 30 runs this season. KR junior Jayden Davis, an Ohio State University commit, ranks fith in the conference with five HRs.
Shawnee ranks first in the conference in runs scored with 174. Dubie leads the conference in both batting average (.612) and RBIs (26), while senior teammate Ava George ranks fifth in batting average at .540 and is tied for third in RBIs with teammate Lily Wilson in RBIs (21). On the mound, Dubie has a 2.17 ERA and eight wins and senior Kelty Hannan has six wins.
Both teams have played one-run games this season. Kenton Ridge scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Teays Valley 7-6 on March 30, while Shawnee walked off Southeastern 3-2 on March 28.
