The Miami Hurricanes are making a habit of landing a big quarterback in the transfer portal.

And apparently, they wanted Pitt's Mason Heintschel to be next.

Two years ago, Miami landed Cam Ward.

Last season, it was Carson Beck.

This year, it's Darian Mensah from Duke who went for a assumed big-money deal to transfer and play for the Hurricanes.

According to Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi, though, Miami wanted Heintschel first.

This is what Narduzzi had to say in a new radio appearance on Friday:

Pat Narduzzi says on Sirius XM that the day Mason Heintschel received a lucrative offer from Miami and re-committed to Pitt, that he called Duke coach Manny Diaz and told him he better watch out.

QB Darian Mensah would later wind up transferring to Miami.

And to be clear: Teams aren't allowed to make offers to players who aren't in the transfer portal, at least by the rules.

Some on social media are questioning why Miami would've gone after Heintschel first, but it makes a lot of sense. They would've gotten him for two years, probably, and maybe at a cheaper rate than what is likely a one-year pact with Mensah.

Heintschel was also quite impressive as a true freshman for the Panthers. He completed 63.6% of his passes for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns (eight interceptions).

The youngster from Oregon, Ohio (outside of Toledo) stuck with his local Clay High School rather than transfer to a big private school, and he's now sticking with Pitt.

Heintschel is loyal and could lead the Panthers to big things. Miami apparently wanted a piece of that.
