The 2025 National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes will make his first start of the season on Opening Day against a New York Mets squad that enters 2026 with one of the most talented rosters in the MLB.
The Pittsburgh Pirates travel to Citi Field for their opening series, where Skenes will face a revamped Mets lineup featuring Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.
After leading the majors with a 1.97 ERA last season, Skenes will be tested early by a New York offense that added Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, Jorge Polanco, and Luis Robert during a massive offseason overhaul. Following a disappointing 2025, the Mets moved on from franchise staples Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil to build a new-look core in Queens.
The matinee marks the highly anticipated follow-up to Skenes' unanimous Cy Young campaign. He is slated to duel with the Mets' newly acquired ace, Freddy Peralta, who arrived via trade from the Brewers.
After becoming the first pitcher since Dwight Gooden in 1984-85 to win the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young in back-to-back seasons, Skenes enters this year with the weight of a franchise on his shoulders. The Pirates are banking on another historic performance from their right-hander to propel them past a Mets squad that has spared no expense in its pursuit of a National League East title.

Skenes, the reigning National League Cy Young winner, is coming off a historic 2025 season. In 187.2 innings pitched, he compiled 216 strikeouts and a major league-best 1.97 ERA. His performance made him the first pitcher in MLB history to record over 200 strikeouts with a sub-2.00 ERA while not posting a winning record (10-10).
Mets starter Peralta is coming off the best season of his career, leading the National League with 17 wins in 2025. Last season, Peralta went 17-6 with a 2.70 ERA and 204 strikeouts over 176.2 innings, earning his second All-Star selection and finishing fifth in the Cy Young voting. He now steps into the spotlight as the new ace for a New York squad that completely rebuilt its core over the winter.
