The New York Mets are likely to be trade deadline sellers this season, but that doesn't mean all of their players are going to be on the move by the August 3 deadline.

A few players, like Juan Soto and the youngsters, will stick around. But, there are a few others who could be much more interesting trade conversations this summer, one of which is a 2.39 ERA right-hander in Clay Holmes.

Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic revealed the most likely outcome for Holmes this summer, between an extension and a trade. The more-likely result is, unfortunately, a trade for Holmes.

Mets more likely to trade Clay Holmes than sign him to an extension​

"While the possibility remains that the New York Mets and Clay Holmes agree to an extension, there's a significantly greater likelihood of a trade, said people familiar with the situation who were granted anonymity in exchange for their candor," Sammon and Rosenthal report.

This trade deadline update for the Mets on Holmes is a significant one. The 2.39 ERA right-hander, who is just beginning a rehab assignment, is more likely to be on the move this summer than not.

It shouldn't be a huge surprise, as the Mets could stand to benefit from shedding payroll this summer and saving up for a roster reshuffling over the next offseason or two.

Holmes should have some trade interest this summer, as the right-hander is a rental option who could provide some major help to a contender in 2026.

He also has a $12 million player option for 2027, which shouldn't play a huge factor in whether the Mets trade him or not, as that's not something teams will be relying on.

This update from Rosenthal and Sammon is a big one for the Mets, as Holmes is more likely to be traded by August 3 than the Mets signing him to a long-term extension.

And if the Mets aren't going to sign him to a new deal, then trading him before he hits free agency, and potentially leaves for nothing, would make the most sense.
