After selecting Carson Wiggins in the first and sitting out the second round (pick forfeited in the Bo Bichette signing), the Mets selected Texas outfielder Aiden Robbins in the 3rd round.
Robbins played the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Seton Hall, batting .422/.537/.652 with 6 homers and more walks than strikeouts in 255 PA as a sophomore in 2025. He then won the batting title in the CCBL before transferring to Texas for his junior season, where the offensive production did not slow down at all – .333/.426/.696 line with 24 HR in 284 PA.
Robbins ranked 45th on Baseball Prospectus’s draft board and 28th on Baseball America’s. Those ordinal rankings would suggest the Mets got something of a steal here, but there’s ample reason for skepticism here. Robbins features a funky, steep swing that can at times appeared grooved, portending potential struggles with pro pitching. There’s also significant questions about his ability to recognize and hit spin. Put another way, there are some clear reasons why Robbins was available this late, suggesting that teams – who always have more info than us on the public side – were a bit less bullish on the profile.
In the the third round, Robbins will likely receive an overslot bonus relative to the $859.9K slot for the 92nd pick, eating into the savings from Carson Wiggins’ presumably underslot bonus. The Mets were hamstrung by their small bonus pool coming into the draft, but even with that limitation these two picks reflect a troubling lack of creativity at first blush.
The Mets will have one more selection on Day 1, picking 120th overall in Round 4.
