The New York Mets have had a rough 2026 season, though they've been playing a lot better this May. But the team did lose Clay Holmes for a long time recently, and could use more starting pitching help.

They could pursue a trade, but the most realistic way to improve the rotation is to promote someone from the minor leagues. Such a plan has brought a lot of attention to one decision the Mets made at Triple-A on Wednesday.

As Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online shared, the Mets have scratched Jonah Tong from his scheduled start on Wednesday at Triple-A. While there is promotion intrigue, there is also a bit of an injury concern.

"Jonah Tong was originally scheduled to start for Triple-A Syracuse today, but was a late scratch," Mayer shared on Twitter/x.

This is a notable change for the Mets, as Tong, the 22-year-old top pitching prospect, might not be on his way to the big leagues with another promotion.

Instead of letting him make his start at Triple-A, the Mets might be calling him up to the big leagues to join the MLB rotation.

He struggled last season, posting a 7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched with 22 strikeouts and a 2-3 record across five starts.

This year in the minor leagues, Tong hasn't been that great either, putting up a 5.68 ERA in nine starts with a 1-3 record and 55 strikeouts with 24 walks in 38 innings pitched.

But, with the Mets rotation going through some struggles, with Nolan McLean's nine-run outing, Holmes injury, and David Peterson's 5.40 ERA, adding a new starter makes a lot of sense.

Tong isn't guaranteed to come up to the Majors, though, as his scratching from this start might be due to an injury. While there's some uncertainty, including an injury concern, there is a chance that Tong is called up to the Majors very soon.
