The battle for the 2026 Formula 1 Championship is moving away from the wind tunnel and straight into the engine dyno. With the FIA’s new Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system fully in play, the grid’s top engine manufacturers are engaged in a mid-season horsepower arms race.
While Scuderia Ferrari has been publicly gearing up to unleash a massive “ADUO 2” power unit at their home race in Monza, an explosive new rumor suggests Mercedes is preparing to crash the Italian party with a major engine upgrade of their own.
According to a breaking report from Motorsport_IT, Mercedes is actively preparing an upgraded power unit specifically for the Italian Grand Prix in response to Ferrari’s impending engine boost.
Under the FIA’s new 2026 cost-cap relief mechanism, engine manufacturers who fall behind the performance benchmark (which the FIA shockingly determined to be the Red Bull-Ford powertrain) are granted ADUO tokens to legally upgrade their hardware without financial penalty. Because Mercedes was deemed slightly adrift of the Red Bull benchmark during the first assessment period, they were granted one ADUO upgrade for the 2026 season.

Initially, the paddock consensus was that the Silver Arrows would save their single token to develop their 2027 engine. However, Ferrari’s rapid development pace has seemingly forced a sudden reversal.
Engineers at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth are reportedly readying an advanced specification of the M17 E Performance power unit. The Monza-bound upgrade is expected to feature critical improvements to both the combustion chamber and the turbocharger, perfectly paired with a newly developed Petronas fuel mixture.
Mercedes’ sudden aggression is a direct response to the threat brewing in Maranello.
Because Ferrari’s initial 2026 power unit suffered a larger deficit (greater than 4 percent), the FIA granted them two ADUO tokens this season. The Italian squad already deployed their first token to modest effect, but their highly anticipated “ADUO 2” package is slated to debut at the Temple of Speed. Ferrari’s Monza upgrade reportedly features a completely redesigned turbocharger—complete with revised blade angles and advanced materials—specifically targeting a massive 30-horsepower jump to achieve straight-line parity with Mercedes.
For Mercedes, bringing this upgrade to Monza is a strategic masterstroke born out of necessity.

Beyond just finding more top speed, Brixworth engineers have heavily focused this upgrade on improving baseline reliability. Both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have already exhausted their allocation of four power units for the 2026 championship. Since both drivers are already staring down inevitable 20-place grid penalties for component swaps, Mercedes can tactically absorb the punishment at Monza while arming their drivers with a fresh, high-powered engine for the crucial final stretch of the championship fight.
If both the Mercedes and Ferrari upgrades hit the track in Italy, the high-speed straights of Monza will host the most explosive power battle of the 2026 season.
