Meet Megan Keller, whose childhood hockey dreams culminate in a Team USA Olympic moment you can only dream of originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Megan Keller refused as a child to take skating lessons until she was allowed to attend in hockey gear.
She told her hometown newspaper in Farmington Hills, Michigan, that she began to have Olympic hockey dreams when she herself watched the United States women's hockey team on her television.
Back then, it's the kind of moment you can only dream of.
But on Thursday in Milan, Keller lived out the dream.
Overtime. Next goal wins. USA. Canada.
And somehow, the defender Keller found herself 1-on-1 in transition. She dangled, bringing the puck in a crossover past her defender. And then she poked a backhand shot past the Canadian goaltender.
Ballgame.
Gold medal.
Dream come true.

Keller was once just a little sister watching her older brother Ryan play hockey.
She didn't want to do anything else, not really. Hockey was her dream.
Her father Greg shared with their hometown newspaper that Keller had a sign above her bed that read, "Dream until your dreams come true."
Keller already had a gold medal from 2018 and a silver medal from 2022. On a team of a lot of new faces, the 29-year old defender was one of the veterans.
She played collegiately for Boston College, one of the highest-scoring defensive players in college hockey history. Now, she plays in the PWHL for the Boston Fleet.
But through all of that, all the scoring, winning, achieving -- never anything like this.

When the story of one of the greatest women's hockey teams to ever take the ice is told, Megan Keller's name will be the most important part of the story.
It's the stuff of dreams. And somehow real life outdid even the dreaming.
