The first thing that stood out when taking to the sideline at Raiders training camp today was a familiar site -- Maxx Crosby full speed in every warmup and every drill.
That was a sight we didn't see throughout this offseason while he recovered from offseason knee surgery. But he's back. And the sight has new QB Kirk Cousins a bit worried.
“I'm just a little bit nervous that he's, he's got to respect the red jersey this next few weeks, so try to make sure that happens," Cousins said of Crosby.
No doubt Cousins got plenty of horror stories from Aidan O'Connell about Crosby coming after the quarterbacks a little too hard in practices. We've all seen it firsthand that he tends to make more contact with the QBs than you typically see. And sometimes he hears about from his coaches. Especially if those coaches are offensive minded guys like Josh McDaniels and Jon Gruden.
His reputation most definitely precedes him so his new coaches are even a bit over cautious. Or perhaps the correct level of cautious.
“I just…(laughs) I can't tell you how many people have come up to me already and just been like, ‘Obviously you know it’s practice, you can't do this’ (laughs)," Maxx said. "I have a whole, you know, textbook full of rules that I gotta follow or I’m gonna get in trouble, but that's, you know, it comes with it. You know, I practice one way, and I know that, and I know I push the line, and sometimes I go over the line. But ultimately it's because I want to be greatest at what I do, and I want to push my teammates to be the greatest version of themselves. So, when you get out there and bullets are flying, I'm not thinking about not finishing a play, you know what I mean? It’s just not in my nature.
"So, that's something I've been dealing with my whole career. It's not easy. But Klint (laughs) got after me the 1st day and Robbie [Leonard] and, like, just every single, I feel like every single day he was like, ‘you got a second, homie, uh…’ And I’m like I get it. But yeah, that's how it’s been with every coach. That's something that, I mean, that's literally all the way back to college. Coach Craig, he had to kick me out of practice all the time, but it's growth, you know, you focus on getting better and trying to be the best version of yourself, that’s all I can do.”
We are a few days from pads going on. That's when you'll really see whether Crosby can respect the red jersey, as Cousins puts it. For now, he should just be happy that the Raiders' best player is back on the field preparing for the upcoming season with everyone else.
