Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy suffered a head injury after a collision at first base on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Muncy hit a ground ball and ran down the first base line hard, trying to beat it out. As a result of his effort and run, first baseman Ildemaro Vargas and Muncy collided.

They were both down for a while, but both walked under their own power after an initial checkup.

Santiago Espinal entered the game at third base and pinch-ran for Muncy at first base.

Espinal went on to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning after he took over for Muncy, scoring on a double from Ryan Ward, who got a hard-hit ball to go over Corbin Carroll’s head.

It was meant to be a routine flyout, but the spin and angle led to Carroll misplaying it, resulting in the Dodgers scoring.

Muncy had been recovering from a wrist injury he sustained more than a week ago. He only missed a handful of games before coming back, with the swelling going down relatively quickly

Muncy is one of the best third basemen in baseball, and he was on his way to securing an All-Star appearance. He has been a stable hitter who gets on base at a high level, all while defending the hot corner well.

On the season, Muncy has 14 home runs with 22 RBIs, hitting .254 and a .860 OPS. His OPS is the best since 2021.

In terms of the third base options, the Dodgers have Espinal against lefty pitching and Alex Freeland against righties for the time being.

They can hold it down for as long as needed, though his experience cannot be replaced. Muncy is a true leader for the clubhouse, and his steadiness will be missed.
