The NBA world has been overwhelmed with blockbuster trades over the last several days. And while it wasn't as big as some of the other deals going down, the Dallas Mavericks have made a significant move to reshape their roster.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavericks are sending AJ Johnson, a protected 2030 Golden State Warriors first-round pick, and two future second-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Santi Aldama.
Dallas is also utilizing the $20.3 million trade exception it created in February during the Anthony Davis trade with the Washington Wizards, allowing the front office to add another key contributor without sacrificing its current core.

The move is another indication that the team isn't waiting around to improve the roster. Rather than relying solely on free agency, Dallas has aggressively explored the trade market to add proven NBA talent, and Aldama fits that strategy perfectly.
The 25-year-old has steadily developed into one of the league's more intriguing stretch forwards. Standing at seven feet tall, Aldama brings versatility on both ends of the floor with the ability to space the floor, rebound, and defend multiple positions. His size and shooting touch give Dallas another frontcourt weapon capable of fitting alongside several different lineup combinations.

Aldama has averaged double-digit points in each of the last three seasons for the Grizzlies, and shot a solid 48 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc this past season.
For a Mavericks team looking to remain relevant in the Western Conference, adding another dependable rotation player addresses an important need. Aldama has shown he can contribute as both a starter and a reserve during his time in Memphis, giving head coach Dusty May plenty of flexibility when constructing lineups.
Dallas has a pair of centers in Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, but both of them have had some trouble with injuries. With the Aldama trade, the team could part ways with one of them (most likely Gafford), and get some value for him while adding a shooter like Santi next to franchise cornerstone Cooper Flagg.
With Aldama now joining the roster, Dallas adds another versatile piece as they try to build the best possible lineup around their new superstar.
