A fixture of the Memphis rizzlies' lineup for the past few years is reportedly on the move.
Santi Aldama is headed to the Mavericks in a trade for AJ Johnson, a protected 2030 first round pick from the Warriors and two future second round picks, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The Grizzlies also traded the draft rights to Tarik Biberovic to Dallas. The Grizzlies drafted Biberovic in the second round in 2023, but he hasn't yet come to the NBA.
Aldama was a first round pick in 2021 and had played his entire NBA career with the Grizzlies.
Ja Morant had been the longest-tenured player on the Grizzlies' roster until he was traded to the Trail Blazers earlier this week. That briefly meant Aldama earned that honor before he was also traded. The longest-tenured player on the Grizzlies' roster is now 21-year-old GG Jackson.
Aldama averaged 14 points and 6.7 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 season, both career highs. He played a significant role for the Grizzlies over the past few seasons, and his versatility as a scorer makes him an intriguing piece for a Mavericks team rebuilding around Cooper Flagg. He signed a new deal with the Grizzlies last summer and is signed for two more years, with the 2027-28 season a team option.
Johnson was a first round pick in 2023, but he's bounced around the NBA and the Grizzlies will be his fourth team. He has two years left on his rookie contract.
The Grizzlies still have plenty of work to do to cut down the roster after this trade, but they've picked up more draft assets for the future as they continue to rebuild around Cam Boozer, Zach Edey, Cedric Coward and the rest of their young roster. Memphis has at least 18 players on standard contracts (which could be 19 if second round pick Richie Saunders signs a standard deal) and the maximum is 15 once the season starts.
