The Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA world Monday morning, agreeing to sign Michigan Wolverines coach and recent NCAA champion Dusty May to replace Jason Kidd as their head coach, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. This comes recently after the Mavericks were said to be monitoring both May and Duke head coach Jon Scheyer.

Although Scheyer has a connection with Mavericks star Cooper Flagg, May proved to be easier to pry from his school than Scheyer. Additionally, May's Michigan Wolverines saw plenty of talent depart for the 2026 NBA Draft, as key contributors Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. are all expected to be first-round selections, which certainly could have played a role in his decision. Either way, May is on to his first NBA job and will get to work immediately with the draft just one day away.
