It’s been a busy week for the Michigan Wolverines basketball program. Michigan’s former head coach grabbed one former Wolverines but let two others join Western Conference rivals.

The whirlwind began on Tuesday when it was announced that the reigning national champions will be losing their head coach to the NBA, when May was hired to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

Next, the Wolverines saw three leaders on their NCAA title team get taken in the lottery of the NBA Draft, including one, Morez Johnson Jr. going to the Mavericks. Michigan also saw the Golden State Warriors grab Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick and former UCLA BruinAday Mara come off the board a pick later to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Clearly Dallas loved Johnson to select him ahead of Lendeborg and Mara, but was that the right call for the Mavericks, who are building around the reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

College Sports Wire writer Matt Zemek explained why the Mavericks letting the 7'3" Mara fall to the Thunder might end up costing Dallas in the long run.

“Dusty May's move looks worse now than it did on Monday, when it hit the airwaves and the wire services. He was already going into the teeth of the Western Conference with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs poised to dominate for the next several years,” Zemek wrote. “Now the Thunder, who finished second to the Spurs and will be ultra-motivated to topple Victor Wembanyama, got a big man who can play serviceable defense against Wemby. Aday Mara might not be the Wemby stopper, but he just needs to be the Wemby handler, someone who can shave just a few points or rebounds here and there from Wemby's stat line. That could be enough to swing a seven-game series.”

Yes, May and the Mavericks have Flagg, who appears to be a superstar but they’ll have to handle fellow superstars such as Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in a very competitive Western Conference.
