Dallas Mavericks general manager Mike Schmitz said the team and Sergio De Larrea are still working to determine if the Spanish guard will play for the team next season or remain in Europe.
De Larrea was the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft after averaging 7.1 points, 2.7 assists and 2.2 rebounds while shooting 38.8% from 3-point range with Valencia Basket. He was the 2026 Liga ACB Best Young Player for his play in the Spanish League.
The 6-foot-6 De Larrea missed the draft while with Valencia Basket in the ACB Finals, helping the group to the title after defeating Barcelona 3-1 in their best-of-five series matchup. He has communicated with the Mavericks and is still working on a plan for the 2026-27 season.
"We are still working through all of that with Sergio," Schmitz said on Wednesday. "Whether it is next year or the following, to have that level of size and IQ in our program is huge for us. I think we got bigger across all of these different archetypes of players, added more positional size, got tougher and added some IQ as well, and Sergio is a huge part of that."
De Larrea was named to the All-Liga ACB Young Players Team in each of the past two seasons, while he was also the 2025 Spanish Super Cup MVP after helping Valencia to the championship. He averaged 5.4 points in 45 games across all league competitions that year.
The 20-year-old was highly touted in the draft this year because of his playmaking, vision and shooting. The team has been encouraged by his physical growth, along with his defensive versatility, boasting strong instincts and length to create turnovers.
The Mavericks are confident De Larrea will adjust to the NBA with due time, whether that period begins next year or the one after. Fresh off winning the title in Spain, De Larrea welcomes the chance to eventually make the jump to the United States to continue his journey.
"He is super excited," Schmitz said. "(He is) very excited about the opportunity (to join) the organization. He is actually a Mavs fan at different points of his life growing up, so he shared some of those stories and how thankful he is to be a part of the organization."
