The Tour de France showcased its longest stage of this year's event, a 205.8-kilometer (127.9-mile) route from Dole to Belfort. This hilly stage tested riders with the legendary Ballon d’Alsace, and it was Mauro Schmid who claimed his first-ever Tour stage on July 17.
Three cyclists involved in a July 16 crash during the sprint finish were unable to start the day's stage. Fernando Gaviria (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto Intermarché) both suffered fractured collarbones, while Frits Biesterbos (Picnic-PostNL) withdrew with unspecified injuries.
Stage 13 remained competitive, with 57 of the 172 riders still battling for position in the breakaway well past the halfway mark. Jasper Philipsen claimed victory in the intermediate sprint, narrowly edging out Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay.
The breakaway group remained tightly packed over the day’s first major ascent, the category 3 Col des Croix, with Belgian Quinten Hermans reaching the summit ahead of his rivals. The intensity continued on the following category 1 climb, as Tom Pidcock seized the opportunity to win the King of the Mountains points.
In the final kilometers, Harold Tejada and Schmid broke 10 seconds ahead of the rest, engaging in a head-to-head battle for the stage win. Schmid ultimately found an extra gear and passed Tejada in the final meters to claim victory at Belfort.
