It’s been a month since the Los Angeles Rams shocked the world by drafting Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick, bringing in the former Alabama quarterback to back up and likely succeed Matthew Stafford down the road. We’ve heard plenty from Sean McVay, Les Snead and Simpson himself, but one important member of the team had yet to speak out about the selection: Stafford.

The reigning NFL MVP, fresh off signing a $55 million extension, spoke publicly about the Rams’ decision to draft Simpson for the first time on the “Pat McAfee Show” Wednesday and he handled the questions like a pro. He expressed excitement over the addition of Simpson, saying he’s happy to take him under his wing and groom the rookie – while simultaneously doing everything he can to help the Rams win.

McVay and Snead weren’t the only ones who were big fans of Simpson. Stafford was, too.

“I’m with him in the meeting room, on the practice field, trying to share as much knowledge as I can,” Stafford said. “Listen, I was a big fan of Ty when he was playing at Alabama. I sent him a text after he got drafted and said, ‘Really enjoyed watching you play, just you were in the wrong jersey. You weren’t a dog.’”

Stafford watched him play at Alabama and liked what he saw, calling Simpson “a talented kid.” Having been a rookie quarterback before, Stafford knows how important it is to have support in the locker room, so he’s going to help Simpson along in any way that he can.

“I did enjoy watching him play. He’s a talented kid,” he added. “I’m going to do everything I can to get this team ready to play, to win, but at the same time share some of the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career because I wouldn’t be in the seat that I am right now talking to you guys after a really good football season if I didn’t have people that were helping me out along the way, too, so I’m happy to do that. He’s been a sponge, he’s looking to get better.”

It’s no surprise that Stafford is taking all of this in stride. He probably would’ve liked to have an instant-impact rookie to help him win a ring, but he’s happy to help Simpson out while he’s still playing. The question now is how long Stafford plans to stick around and keep Simpson on the bench.

Whether it’s one year or two (or more), Stafford will impart all the wisdom that he can on Simpson.
