If you thought one of John Harbaugh's presumably first motivational training camp speeches for the New York Giants fell flat, well, you do not nearly know the depths that first-year offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has plumbed.
Let's take a step back for a second. Years ago, in 2018, Matt Nagy was the hotshot coach with a fiery personality at the helm of a mini Chicago Bears renaissance. But kicking problems, largely stemming from Cody Parkey's maddening inconsistency, plagued those Bears all year. Those same problems would end a 12-win Bears season in the first round of the NFL playoffs with a sequence coined the "Double Doink." Nagy, of course, could not live that ending down.
Rather infamously, an obsessive Nagy used an "Augusta Silence" in an open competition search for a kicker in the following season. That same search managed to gloss over some very real issues and flaws for the Bears that were never addressed in the offseason because they were so deadset on finding a kicker. Fast forward another two seasons, and the Bears fired Nagy, who never quite reached those same heights in Chicago.
After capturing a couple of Super Bowl rings by "coordinating" the Kansas City Chiefs' offense over the last few years (a.k.a. riding Patrick Mahomes' coattails), Nagy is the guy running the Giants' offense now. Based on a new viral clip featuring Nagy sharing his coaching mantra with Giants players, it seems apparent he has yet to process the tragic ending of the one truly promising season he had as a head coach in Chicago.
How do I know this? Well, I don't. Not for sure anyway. But we can make educated inferences. Nagy talked about wanting the Giants' offensive players to be (P)hysical, (T)ough, (S)mart, and (D)etailed:
Uh, if there's one thing we all know about Matt Nagy, it's that he probably has a form of P.T.S.D. from his kicking foibles with the Bears:
In all fairness to Nagy, he does have those two Super Bowl champion rings. No one can ever take them away from him. But I'm certain he wants to be a head coach again one day. I mean, he is still only 48 years old, after all. And to get there, he'll not only have to enjoy some measure of success with the Giants, but he'll also have to bury his demons with the Bears, too.
Nagy was also a part of the Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staff in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
