Matt Campbell knows that he has big shoes to fill here at Penn State and he isn’t shying away from that reality. Although the team experienced little-to-no College Football Playoff success with James Franklin, he brought a level of consistency and a sense of stability that some schools would give anything to have.

The Nittany Lions’ new head man is no slouch himself, having led Iowa State to a 72-55 record over his 10-year reign there to go along with three Bowl Game wins. Now with his move to the Big Ten, he’ll be facing much tougher competition and go toe-to-toe with much better coaches.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today recently ranked each coach in the conference, and he placed Campbell near the middle of the pack at No. 8. That number is nothing to sneeze at in a conference that is home to some of the most experienced coaches in the sport — Kyle Whittingham and Kirk Ferentz — and some of the best — Dan Lanning and Ryan Day.

Really the only thing holding Campbell back from success is the lack of competition, and he’ll certainly face more of it this season. If he leads the Nittany Lions to a successful season, then there is a good chance that he’s higher on this list next year.
