Penn State head coach Matt Campbell has been ecstatic about his next chapter since he was hired back in December. He knows it will be a difficult task to follow in James Franklin’s footsteps and reach the heights the former Nittany Lions leader took the team to, but he’s prepared for the challenge.
Campbell has repeatedly stated that this job is a “dream come true,” and “one of the great opportunities of all time,” as he gets his first opportunity at a big school. He experienced overwhelming success at Iowa State, but there was nowhere near as much pressure to win or media attention on the team as he’ll experience at Penn State.
Legendary college football coach Urban Meyer, who is a longtime friend of Campbell, recently discussed his buddy’s new job and gave him a stern warning. The three-time national champion acknowledged the jump Campbell made from the Cyclones to the Nittany Lions, but that, “he’s not used to the hammering that you’re gonna take if you stumble.”
Meyer isn’t wrong — Franklin can tell you just how difficult the job is, constantly being ridiculed despite his frequent double-digit win season. But those ridicules seemed to be more built up frustration from the lack of competitiveness against elite teams rather than fans being too hard on him.
Don’t be fooled, the fanbase won’t hesitate to voice their concerns if things go awry, but Campbell should have a bit of leeway at least for this season while the program tries to reset. However, the new coach has been building some impressive recruiting classes and creating a ton of buzz around the team that wasn’t expected, so there are more expectations than initially projected.
Penn State is a tough place to be when expectations aren’t being met, and Meyer wanted to make that clear to his close friend.
