Players and coaches make it a habit not to search their name on social media so they don’t get swept up in the discussion surrounding them, so hopefully Matt Campbell also took part in that practice. He was viewed as a safe pick when Penn State hired him last year, someone who could bring stability to a program, but there were questions about the heights a team could reach with him at the helm.
There is still a long way to go in order to completely dispel those concerns, but the view of Campbell has been much more positive in recent months. Former Nittany Lions quarterback Todd Blackledge recently sat down with some team reporters for On3 Sports, where he told them, “I think Matt Campbell was the perfect hire, the perfect fit for where we are right now as a program.”
Not only did Penn State need someone who could help them win big games — they needed someone who could bring stability. The move to fire James Franklin unsurprisingly brought on a firestorm of transfers and left the 2027 commitment cupboard entirely barren, needing a steady hand to navigate the chaos. Campbell has been that so far, refilling the Class of 2027 lineup and managing to foster a tight-knit, family-oriented culture that has impressed many.
He’s also received some love in recent coaching rankings, both nationally and in the Big Ten, proving just how respected he is by the public. It seems like the Nittany Lions might have found a gem in Campbell, and he’ll get his chance to prove it to the world in a little under two months.
