The Penn State Nittany Lions during fall camp want to ensure a lot of things. While there are certain roles that have been set within the team already, there are still some things that head coach Matt Campbell wants to see improve. One of those is a solid, yet highly untested WR room that has a lot of new faces and one returner looking to prove himself within the squad. For Matt Campbell, it is paramount that these kinds of players grow throughout the rest of camp into capable players that can be leaders in this offense.
One in particular, Chase Sowell, could get a much larger role than the one he had at Iowa State. In 2025, Sowell only caught 32 passes for 500 yards after compiling 1,300 yards in his time with East Carolina. Now though, as a potential WR1, he needs to put together a solid season to reassure Penn State fans of his abilities. "[Sowell's] last step from good to elite because he has elite ability is consistency," Campbell told reporters on Friday. "Man, the ability to be the best. Game in, game out; moment in, moment out. And that's what you would hope for."
Another player of note is Brett Eskildsen, the presumptive WR1 after leading Iowa State in receiving yards last season, albeit with only 526. Still, he was only a sophomore last season and after a freshman season that really didn't see him get a chance to show his potential, his growth in 2025 is a noted step forward. Yet again, Campbell preaches a consistent continuation of growth and maturation for both. "Those two guys give you proven reps . . . these guys can do it," Campbell said of both Sowell and Eskildsen. "Can they do it at the consistency now that the great ones look like."The last factor in the room is in fact the only returner in Koby Howard. Questions about where he fits in will be the loudest as Penn State fans reacquaint themselves with his game. If he doesn't get a lot of reps, chances are many fans and pundits alike will point to regression and perhaps a bit of frustration as well. Still, if Howard can just prove his continued reliability and continue his new found rapport with QB Rocco Becht, then he could be an integral part of this WR corps.
Overall, there is a lot of potential to be had when it comes to Penn State's receivers. Now, it just needs to translate on the field.
