Match Preview: Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund in Emirates Cup pre-season test

Arsenal return to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Mikel Arteta’s side welcome Borussia Dortmund for their latest pre-season test.

The Gunners will be hoping to respond after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in Dublin last time out. That followed an encouraging 4-1 victory over Girona in their opening pre-season fixture.

Results are not everything at this stage of the summer, particularly with Arteta still working with a heavily modified squad, but a return to the Emirates provides another opportunity to build fitness and momentum ahead of the new campaign.

Arsenal team news and injuries​

Several important Arsenal players remain unavailable following extended post-World Cup breaks, including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, David Raya, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi.

There is better news surrounding Arsenal’s captain Martin Ødegaard, who has returned to full training.

Defensively, William Saliba remains sidelined with a back problem, while Jurriën Timber is highly unlikely to feature following summer surgery. Youngster Louie Copley is also unavailable after suffering an ACL injury during pre-season.

One of the biggest attractions for supporters could be a first glimpse of Bruno Guimarães in Arsenal colours. The £75 million signing could make his debut from the bench, while Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier could also make their first appearances at the Emirates.

Dortmund also arrive with absentees​

Niko Kovač has availability issues of his own.

Gregor Kobel and Julian Ryerson are unavailable following their late returns from international duty, while Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck are sidelined through injury.

Carney Chukwuemeka is also highly doubtful due to a knee problem, although 17-year-old Kaua Prates has recovered from a thigh injury and is back in the squad.

Dortmund have won two and lost two of their four pre-season matches, so both teams will be looking for a positive performance at the Emirates.

For Arsenal, though, much of the attention could be on the new faces and whether Arteta gets the reaction he wants following the defeat in Dublin.
