The state champion Hub City Little League 9-11 Softball All-Stars will represent Maryland in the East Region Invitational at North East (Md.) Little League starting next week.
They will be bringing big bats with them.
Hub City scored 40 runs combined in its three victories at the state tournament, also played at North East.
"I think these girls are ready to show the East Coast what Hub City softball is made of," said manager Art Rhoderick. "This is my first year with (Hub City), but from my understanding, we've come leaps and bounds (from where we were) and we're on the map now. We hope some kids want to come out next year and play with us because it's good softball."
After a tight 7-5 win over Montgomery County to start the state tournament, Hub City rolled to a 17-0 win over Chesapeake City in the winners bracket final and a 16-6 win in a rematch with Montgomery County in the championship game.
"We're going to get on base, whether it's the first hitter or the 12th hitter," Rhoderick said. "These girls find a way to get on base, they find a way to generate runs, and it's from surprising spots you wouldn't expect. We score just as many runs from the seven, eight, nine, 10 spots as we do from the one, two, three spots. It's a good problem to have."
The East Region Invitational starts with opening ceremonies on July 31. Games begin on Aug. 1.
Here's what Rhoderick had to say about each Hub City all-star:
"Small, but mighty. She finds a way to get on base every time. For her first year playing softball, she's doing really, really well."
"She's one of our players who plays year-round and one of our solid pitchers. She's one of the leaders of the team."
"She's a firecracker, always high energy, always ready to go and does whatever is asked. She's been in probably four different positions since we started."
"She's one of the youngest (players), but you wouldn't tell it watching her play. She's on fire every time she's out there."
"She's another one of the staples of this team. She's high energy, catches a lot, never seems to run out of gas in the tank."
"Another one who's in her first year playing and giving it everything she's got. She's doing very, very well for her first year."
"One of our younger pitchers, a 10U pitcher, but she comes in when needed. She pitched the state championship game for us and brought it home for us."
"She's our big power hitter. She's very athletic and is one of the older players on the team."
"She's another multi-use player. She's been in the outfield and the infield — she's settled into the infield but she can play anywhere and always has a really good attitude about it."
"She has sacrificed for us. She played infield all regular season but has been playing the outfield for us and hasn't complained. She's just ready to do whatever we ask her to do."
"She knows how to get on base. If we tell her to bunt, she's ready to bunt and she doesn't complain about it. She stands there and takes her four balls if she has to. Whatever she needs to do, she gets on base."
"One of the more gifted athletes I've ever coached. She's very new to softball but she has hand-eye coordination like I've never seen from anybody. She hits the ball just about every time she gets up. She's trying to find her spot on the field and moves around whenever needed without complaining."
