BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – East Park Martial Arts Club is located in the heart of Beckley. The classes are completely free, and the instructors take time and money out of their own pockets to help teach their students.
When the kids excelled and qualified for the World Championships in Madrid, Spain everyone was excited for the competition.
After hectic traveling and learning the ways of Spain, the team has returned to the states.
After facing a multitude of difficulties, from the actual traveling to difficulties with the competition layout itself, the instructors say they always get back up and try again no matter what.
East Park Martial Arts heads to the World Championship, but they need YOUR help
59News visited the dojo earlier this year and got a pre-season interview with the team and coaches.
“Doesn’t always go our way. So, we teach them. When I fall down, I get back up. It’s okay to fall down. Then we get back up, and we do the right thing,” said Jeremy Miller.
Multiple students placed in their division as well. All 6 boys came in 6th place or higher in their divisions.
The students tell us about what competitions were held, and how regardless of where they placed, they will continue to train and grow each day.
“It’s grappling only, not combat. That’s for a 17-year-old. Great exercise. Fun, healthy, always nice. Just do it. It’s a hobby,” said J.C Arrington.
Instructors say they are beyond proud of their boys. Regardless of where they placed, they will always be number one in their eyes.
