Marlon Humphrey spent his first nine NFL seasons playing for John Harbaugh. When Jesse Minter took over as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, the veteran cornerback wasn’t sure what to expect.
It didn’t take long for Humphrey to notice a difference.
During an appearance on “The Lounge,” Humphrey described the energy surrounding Minter’s first training camp as “night and day” compared with previous seasons. Minter has brought a calm demeanor to Baltimore while making his expectations clear.
Minter’s defensive background has allowed him to take a hands-on approach with Humphrey and the rest of Baltimore’s defenders. He doesn’t just stop by defensive meetings to observe. Minter can grab the clicker, take control of the room, and spend an hour teaching the details of his defense. Humphrey said Harbaugh occasionally attended defensive meetings, but Minter’s ability to lead an entire session gives players a direct understanding of what their head coach wants.
That approach has carried over to the practice field. According to Humphrey, Minter has been clear about what he will accept and which mistakes he doesn’t want to see repeated. There has been little uncertainty about the standard.
Minter’s assistant coaches have reinforced the same message.
The Ravens are still early in their first training camp under Minter, and the real test will come during the regular season. Baltimore finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs last year, so a change in energy must eventually lead to better results.
Still, Humphrey has been with the organization long enough to recognize when something feels different. Minter’s teaching ability, defensive knowledge and clearly defined expectations have already made an impression on one of Baltimore’s longest-tenured players. Training camp optimism won’t guarantee a return to the playoffs, but Humphrey believes Minter is establishing the foundation Baltimore needs to get there.
