The Miami Marlins rode their June momentum right into the brick wall at Citizens Bank Park on Friday, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 in the series opener.
Marlins starting pitcher Ryan Gusto went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout. William Kempner threw 2.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts, but Cade Gibson gave up two runs on two hits in one inning.
Two of the Marlins' five hits came from Liam Hicks. The designated hitter went 2-for-4 to improve his batting average to .281 on the season. Joe Mack knocked in a double for the Marlins’ only extra-base hit.
Gabriel Rincones Jr., a Florida Atlantic alum, hit a solo home run for his first hit as a Major Leaguer in the second inning to put the Phillies up 1-0. Rincones Jr. hit into a fielder’s choice in the third inning, but it resulted in a run scored.
Justin Crawford drove in another run to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 3-0 later in the third inning. Crawford went 3-for-4 to lead the Phillies at the plate.
JT Realmuto hit a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, in the fifth inning to put the Phillies up 5-0.
The Phillies added two more runs in the seventh inning on a pair of sacrifice flies. Brandon Marsh and Edmundo Sosa each collected two hits for the Phillies (39-33).
Zack Wheeler struck out nine batters with two hits allowed over six scoreless innings. The Phillies bullpen combined for four strikeouts and three hits in three innings.
Tyler Phillips (1-1, 1.86 ERA) will continue his experiment as a starting pitcher against former Marlin Jesus Luzardo (5-4, 4.35 ERA).
Marlins No. 5 prospect RHP Karson Milbrandt leads the farm system with 58.0 innings pitched between Triple-A Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola. The Jumbo Shrimp (37-31) travels to take on Durham on Tuesday.
No. 10 prospect Dillon Lewis leads Marlins minor leaguers with 13 home runs, while Juan Matheus leads the farm system with 44 RBI on the season. Double-A Pensacola (32-31) hosts Birmingham on Tuesday.
No. 12 prospect LF Brandon Compton has hit a home run in three-straight games and leads High-A Beloit with 30 RBI and a .409 on-base percentage. Beloit (26-36) travels to take on Cedar Rapids.
Carter Johnson hit an RBI-triple and scored his organization-leading 47th run to help Single-A Jupiter (36-27) win the Florida State League East Division First Half Championship. The Hammerheads take on their rivals, the Palm Beach Cardinals, on Tuesday.
