Major League Baseball announced that Miami Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer and shortstop Otto Lopez have been added to the National League All-Star roster for the first time in their respective careers.
It’s the first time since 2023 that the Marlins will have two representatives in the MLB All-Star Game, which takes place on Tuesday, July 14, in Philadelphia, Pa.
The starting lineups of both leagues are decided by the voting public, while the reserves and pitching staff are chosen by current players, coaches, and managers, who vote on a player ballot.
Meyer was undeniable this year. The 27-year-old right-hander broke out with a 9-1 record, 2.53 ERA, and 112 strikeouts through 18 starts. Pitching like the ace of the staff, Meyer led the Marlins (47-42) in strikeouts, opponents' batting average (.205), and WHIP (1.11).
Meyer was drafted by the Marlins in the first round of the 2020 Draft and made his debut in 2022. Injuries hampered his potential leading up to this season, which turned out to be his first fully healthy campaign. He told reporters before the Marlins road game against the Athletics on Saturday that the honor was “pretty special.”
“Just kind of looking back at my career, a lot of injuries, I’m glad that it doesn’t feel like a personal award because I have so many staff members that are pulling for me,” Meyer said.
Before his previous start, Meyer went 17 starts without a loss, becoming the last starting pitcher in the Major Leagues to extend such a streak. He tied 1997 World Series hero Liván Hernández for the best start to a season (March 29-June 26) in Marlins history.
“I just wanted to stay healthy, be a good teammate, go every time that I’m asked,” Meyer said.
“After I was off to a pretty good start, I saw the stuff about being undefeated, and I was like, alright, I am feeling good,” he added. “I am throwing the ball pretty good.”
Meyer is now the 11th different Marlins starting pitcher to be named a National League All-Star. The most recent Miami hurler to be an All-Star was Sandy Alcantara during his Cy Young Award season in 2022. Meyer is the first homegrown Marlins starting pitcher to earn a National League All-Star selection since Trevor Rogers in 2021.
“Watching Sandy over the past 4-5 years has been unbelievable,” Meyer said. “He’s a leader by example.”
Meyer is expected to make his next start in Miami on Tuesday, July 7, against the Seattle Mariners.

Max Meyer has added two inches of IVB on his 4-seam fastball this season. Batters are hitting just .210 against it.
