Many big changes are happening for the Dallas Mavericks lately. After a hard year and a new leader, another key person is leaving. This move signals the official end of a famous era.
The Dallas Mavericks announced on Tuesday that they mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd. Kidd coached the team for 5 seasons and led the team to the NBA Finals in 2024. He was also a team champion in 2011.
However, the organization is now moving in a new direction under president Masai Ujiri. "As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team," the president said in a statement, as per ESPN.
Current minority owner of the Mavericks, Mark Cuban, sent an email to share his thoughts on the news. "Obviously I'm a jkidd fan. So I'm surprised and disappointed," he wrote. "But we have to give masai a chance to see what happens. He has been through this before."
He noted that Ujiri has been through these situations before. This reaction shows that even the team owner recognizes that a major reset is underway.
This firing is the latest part of an unraveling that started with the Luka Doncic trade. The team has struggled since they traded their superstar player in early 2025. Without Doncic, the Mavericks won only 69 games and lost 118.
Last season was especially hard because the team won only 26 games. The leaders who built the team during the Doncic years are now all leaving.
Nico Harrison was the general manager who traded Doncic and he was fired in November. Now Jason Kidd is also gone even though he had $40 million left on his contract.
Masai Ujiri was hired to rebuild the basketball operations from head-to-toe. Ujiri is famous for making very difficult moves to help teams win.
In the past, Ujiri fired a top coach and traded a star player in Toronto to win a title. Cuban’s words about Ujiri having experience suggest that Dallas is now in a similar rebuild phase.
The team is now turning toward a new future with young players like Cooper Flagg. Kidd’s exit is the final sign that the era of Doncic is truly over for the Dallas Mavericks.
