The Dallas Mavericks made a shocking decision to fire Jason Kidd on Tuesday as part of one of their first major moves under new president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri. Kidd joined the organization in 2022 and led them to a conference finals in his first season. In 2024, Dallas returned to the finals under his leadership.
The franchise legend didn’t have many admirers in the fan base, but over the past year, his role in developing Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg had stood out and even flipped a few minds. The Mavericks had also signed Kidd to a multi-year contract extension last October, so not many predicted his firing.
However, Ujiri made the bold call, leaving everyone confused. Even Charles Barkley, who found out about the move on-air on ‘Inside The NBA,’ expressed his disbelief.
“Oh my goodness. Jason Kidd just got fired. Wow,” Barkley said.
So why did the Mavericks fire Jason Kidd? Here’s a look at the possible reasons behind Masai Ujiri’s massive decision.
Why Mavericks fired Jason Kidd?
Jason Kidd was an influential voice within the Mavericks organization. According to multiple reports, Kidd even wanted to transition into a front office role and take over as president of basketball operations or general manager after Nico Harrison’s firing. That would have seen him replicate a Brad Stevens-type move with the Boston Celtics.
However, once the Mavericks went with an outside hire, signing Masai Ujiri, the chances of Kidd departing the team grew. Ujiri is likely making it clear that he’s the final decision-maker, unlike in the previous regime under Nico Harrison, where Kidd had his say. NBA reporter Jake Weinbach claimed that Ujiri and Kidd didn’t see eye-to-eye.
Meanwhile, Mavericks reporter Tim Cato summed up the beginning of Ujiri’s term, saying:
“The bottom line is that this is Masai Ujiri’s franchise.”
The Mavericks have been under immense scrutiny, especially the leading decision makers involved in trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February 2025. The shocking move sent shockwaves through the NBA. The mounting fan pressure led to Nico Harrison’s firing.
Meanwhile, there were rumblings that Jason Kidd was not only aware but on board with the decision to move on from Doncic, which drove the franchise away from a potential championship window.
Former NFL player turned TV analyst Emmanuel Acho claimed that Kidd was a “casualty” of Harrison’s error in trading Doncic.
“To my knowledge, Jason Kidd wanted to make a Brad Stevens type of transition and move from head coach to front office,” Acho said on X.”When the Mavs went in a different direction with Masai, Kidd’s days were numbered. This move isn’t surprising but is disappointing. Another casualty of Nico’s Luka error.”
What Masai Ujiri said about firing Jason Kidd
Masai Ujiri made it clear his decision to fire Jason Kidd was a basketball move. It suggested he wasn’t confident in Kidd as someone who could have given the Mavericks a sustained championship window.
“We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach,” Ujiri said.
The Mavericks have their task cut out in finding their next coach. Billy Donovan and Tom Thibodeau are the biggest names on the market, but Dallas could head in another direction. The team could pursue a younger coach who can be with the team long-term and build a tandem with Cooper Flagg and the rest of the young core.
