Mark Byington buyout, contract details as Vanderbilt Commodores coach originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Mark Byington signed a long-term contract extension with Vanderbilt last month, following consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in his first two seasons. The extension keeps him in Nashville after a 27-9 record in 2025-26. Specific terms are undisclosed due to Vanderbilt being a private institution.

This came amid speculation Byington was on a short list for the opening at North Carolina. After the firing of Hubert Davis, the Commodores coach was one of six coaches linked to one of the top jobs in college basketball. And for a good reason. Byington is the first coach in Vanderbilt history to win 20 or more games in each of his first two seasons.

Being able to re-ink Byington is a serious effort to secure him in Nashville long-term and build a contender in the stacked SEC.

Mark Byington buyout terms

Following the March 2026 contract extension, Byington’s buyout is reportedly in the $11 million range, making it a significant financial hurdle for any school trying to pry him from his current situation, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Even if UNC had interest in trying to make a deal with Byington, the eight-figure payout represents nearly three years of salary Davis was being paid for the Tar Heels.

While specific terms of the new deal are not fully public, reports indicate the buyout remains very high, similar to his previous deal.

Where does Vanderbilt go from here with Byington?

The Commodores are in a great position right now. Byington brings a consistent track record to the table and the next two years will prove what he can do with a top-20 recruiting class. Vanderbilt is one of the few schools in the nation to achieve success in both basketball and football in the NIL era.

With Byington in the long-term plans, it will be easier to build a successful program year after year.
