Marianne Picard returned to action for the first time in a month Friday, Feb. 13. It didn’t take long for her to make an impact.
The senior forward had a hand in two first period goals to set the tone for a 4-1 victory for the Wisconsin women’s hockey team over Minnesota State at Mayo Clinic Events Center in Mankato, Minn.
The win allowed the top-ranked Badgers to remain two points ahead of Ohio State in the WCHA standings with three games to play. The outcome also marked UW’s 21st straight win over Minnesota State, a streak that dates to January 2021.
In addition to Picard, sophomore Finley McCarthy and fifth-year senior Lacey Eden recorded one goal and one assist for the Badgers. Eden had her eighth multi-point game in the last 10 contests.
UW junior Cassie Hall scored her 100th career point with a third period goal.
Picard’s two points in the first period came within the span of 90 seconds. At 14 minutes, 18 seconds she scored off passes from McCarthy and freshman Charlotte Pieckenhagen and at the 15:35 mark Picard assisted McCarthy to give UW a 2-0 edge.
Minnesota State cut that lead in half with 3 minutes left in the first period but a short-handed goal by Eden at 4:53 of the second period and a power play goal by Hall at the 7:43 mark of the third closed out the win.
Wisconsin (26-3-2, 20-3-2 WCHA) and Minnesota State (13-16-2, 7-16-2) play Game 2 of the series at 2 p.m. Feb. 14.
