Every time the Panthers tried to seize some momentum from the Maple Leafs in Game 2, Toronto had an answer.
Florida seemed poised to get the edge over Toronto and maybe even the series at one game each. Anton Lundell tied the game at three early in the third period, putting the Panthers in position to take the lead back. But Mitch Marner scored seconds later, putting the Maple Leafs back ahead as Toronto won 4-3 and took a 2-0 lead over Florida in the second-round series.
Aleksander Barkov made sure the Panthers would not be in an early hole. Five seconds into Florida’s first power play of the night, he got a pass from Seth Jones and fired it past through defenseman Chris Tanev’s legs and past backup goalie Joseph Woll (who was playing because starter Anthony Stolarz suffered an injury in Game 1).
The Panthers continued their strong special teams play, killing a pair of early Maple Leafs power plays. Florida successfully killed 23 of the first 25 penalties this postseason and the first six in its series against Toronto. But their penalty-killing luck could not continue forever. Toronto scored on its third power play, with forward Max Pacioretty scoring late in the first period after Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov was called for a delay of game after shooting a puck out of play.
Veterans Brad Marchand scored his first playoff goal with the Panthers 15 seconds into the second period. Center Anton Lundell dropped off a puck for him in front of the net, and Marchand backhanded it past Woll. Marchand has the fourth-most career postseason points against the Maple Leafs.
But the Panthers’ lead was short-lived. A Matthew Tkachuk pass was tipped to Pacioretty, setting up a Toronto rush. Pacioretty passed to William Nylander, who had two goals in Game 1, and Nylander knotted the game at two about four and half minutes into the second period.
Max Domi put Toronto ahead late in the second period, getting an assist from former Panther Steven Lorentz.
Anton Lundell scored on a deflected pass to tie the game at three about five and a half minutes into the third period, but Mitch Marner scored less than a minute later to put Toronto back ahead. Mackie Samoskevich nearly tied the game for Florida about midway through the final period, but Woll made an excellent save to deny the Panthers.
The Panthers will have a chance to get back into the series in Game 3 in Sunrise on Friday night.
