The odds don't seem particularly high of this happening.
But the Toronto Maple Leafs have two big-name new guys: Gavin McKenna and Sergei Bobrovsky. And they both wear the jersey number 72.
Well, they did. Someone is going to have to change.
McKenna wore 72 in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers, then again at the NCAA level with Penn State.
Bobrovsky wore that number while winning back-to-back Stanley Cups as the goalie for the Florida Panthers.
The digits have clearly served both of them well, so for an athlete that's superstitious, this would be a problem.
McKenna, though, seems just fine with deferring. He told reporters that Bobrovsky's NHL pedigree earns him the nod if he wants 72:

Bobrovsky has been 72 for most of his NHL career. Only right when he was getting started, with the Philadelphia Flyers, did he wear the No. 35 instead.
If the Maple Leafs wanted to let one of the guys just flip and wear No. 27, that appears unclaimed at the moment based on the returning players and the digits they wore last season.
McKenna is likely to be in a Toronto jersey longer than Bobrovsky is, so maybe the vet defers to the rookie.
One way or another, there'll almost certainly be a 72. Which player it is remains to be seen.
