Manchester United are set to make their return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2023-24 season, as the team had suffered from a bit of a lull in the league, finishing in eighth and 15th spot in the last two campaigns.

It appears that the Red Devils are looking to bolster their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League, as the team has already secured the signature of Brazilian star Ederson from Atalanta, who has plenty of success on the European stage, having won the Europa League back in 2024.

But it looks as if Manchester United isn’t done adding to their team with the Brazilian, as they’ve not only been looking at RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba, but are among the top teams interested in him.

The Red Devils' interest in the Red Bulls defender

As reported by Fussballdaten’s Ekrem Konur, the Red Devils are perhaps the biggest fans of the Frenchman, having been scouting him for some time, and are even in talks with his delegates over a potential move.

“The Premier League club's management has identified Lukeba as their primary defensive target for this summer transfer window,” writes Konur. “Determined to beat other big names to the punch, United's board has already begun concrete talks with the player's representatives.”

Given Lukeba’s elite defensive work with the Red Bulls last season, recording 37 interceptions and winning 18 tackles, it’s no wonder the red side of Manchester are keen on bringing him aboard.

However, given those stats, the Red Devils aren’t the only teams interested in Lukeba’s signature, as Barcelona have been in contact with his representatives according to Konur, with Chelsea and Tottenham also eyeing up the Leipzig defender, with the latter seeing him as a replacement for Mickey van de Van, who could leave in the summer.

“Spanish giants FC Barcelona… have made initial contact with the player's agent to examine the financial terms and costs of the transfer…” writes Konur. “On the blue side of London, Chelsea remain in pursuit of the French centre-back. The player has been high on the Blues' scouting list for more than two years… Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, have Lukeba at the top of their shortlist as a potential replacement for their defensive stalwart Micky van de Ven.”

For now, Lukeba’s next step will be one of the storylines to follow in the upcoming transfer window.
