The NFL is transitioning into creating offenses that are most successful with receivers who easily get open and make plays after the catch. It is no longer about being the biggest or fastest receiver. Players do not need to be Julio Jones or Calvin Johnson to be a top receiver in the NFL. All they need to do is be reliable and consistent. Enter Makai Lemon.
Making the game easier for your quarterback, such as weapons like Puka Nacua and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have done for their quarterbacks, is now the most important role for a weapon. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is coming off the best season in his career, and a season in which he was the best receiver in the NFL. His success also helped lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory.
Makai Lemon can be that next weapon. He can get open at a high level, he is physical, he is elite after the catch, and he can make the big catches. His size plays no role in his success, as he can jump up and make contested catches. Lemon is also not shy to get heavily involved in run blocking.
Makai Lemon fits the mold for what the top receivers in the NFL now look like, and even in a situation now like the Philadelphia Eagles, I think earlier than many expect, he can add his name to that conversation. The Eagles lost a top playmaker in A.J. Brown this offseason, but Makai Lemon will prove to be the perfect replacement, if not a better fit.
Like Puka Nacua and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, I believe Makai Lemon will become a security blanket for his new quarterback, Jalen Hurts.
