The New England Patriots missed out on signing Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce in free agency.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Pierce agreed to a four-year, $116 million deal to return to the Colts on Monday.
Pierce was linked to the Patriots prior to the start of the NFL’s free agency negotiation period, which began on Monday at noon. The 25-year-old served as an option to replace wide receiver Stefon Diggs, the Patriots’ leading receiver in 2025. New England released Diggs on March 4.
The Colts welcome back their own leading receiver with two days to spare until the free agency signing window opens on March 11. Pierce recorded his first 1,000-yard season in 2025 with 1,003 yards. The Illinois native led the NFL in yards per reception last season with 21.3 yards.
The Patriots will look elsewhere in their search for a leading wide receiver this offseason. New England is linked to Philadelphia Eagles wideout A.J. Brown in trade speculations.
