Cologne claimed a crucial 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Wolfsburg on Friday to get a breather in the Bundesliga relegation fight.

Linton Maina scored the winner in the 29th minue with a deflected shot into the bottom right corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Team-mate Ragnar Ache had earlier missed two big chances while Wolfsburg came close in the 73rd and late on when Adam Daghim's shot was blocked and another effort by him saved by Marvin Schwäbe.

Promoted Cologne rose to 10th with only a second win from 11 matches, and are eight points clear of the danger zone.

Wolfsburg remain 12th with a four-point cushion on Mainz in the relegation play-off spot, with a tally of 19 points their worst ever after 20 top flight matches.

The matchday continues on the weekend, with leaders Bayern Munich aiming to rebound from their first season defeat in the Bundesliga, 2-1 against Augsburg, when they visit SV Hamburg.
